January 12, 2021 - US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo canceled at the last minute what should have been his last trip abroad, eight days before the end of the Trump administration's term and with the president threatened with a second impeachment .

The trip, which was to Brussels, was canceled due to growing fears of violence in the coming days ahead of Joe Biden's swearing in on January 20.

The spokesman for the US State Department, Morgan Ortagus, said the decision was made to collaborate in a peaceful and orderly transition.

After the assault on the US Capitol by rioters last week, encouraged by President Donald Trump's arsonist rally, concerns have been expressed about the safety of Biden's inauguration ceremony.

Pompeo, criticized for not immediately acknowledging Biden's victory in the November election, met his designated successor, Antony Blinken, last week in what a State Department official described as a cordial meeting.
