Hagen (dpa / lnw) - After an exchange of fire with several police officers, a 37-year-old man has to answer before the Hagen jury from today.

The public prosecutor's office accuses the German of multiple attempted murder.

The defendant is said to have been driving a car in Gevelsberg (Ennepe-Ruhr district) late in the evening of May 5th.

According to prosecutors, there were more than 50 grams of heroin and a live firearm inside the vehicle.

When the 37-year-old was stopped by two police officers as part of a general traffic control, he is said to have initially behaved cooperatively.

When the officers then apparently noticed that an arrest warrant had already been issued against the man, he is said to have suddenly resisted.

According to the indictment, the 37-year-old ran to his car, took the gun and fired at one of the police officers.

He was hit, but not fatally injured because of a bulletproof vest.

After the defendant reportedly fired more shots at the other officer, who in turn shot the vehicle, the German apparently accelerated and fled the scene.

According to the public prosecutor's office, however, his car hit the mast of a traffic sign and had to continue the escape on foot.

The arrest did not take place until four hours later, after the defendant allegedly shot another SEK officer in the street.

For the trial, the Hagen jury has scheduled 16 trial days until mid-March.
