Ludwigslust (dpa / mv) - MV Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig has welcomed the talks announced by Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (both SPD) with the future US government on the Nord Stream 2 Baltic gas pipeline.

"I support the federal government that it talks to the new American government about how the sanctions against our companies can be withdrawn," said Schwesig on Tuesday on the sidelines of a visit to a corona vaccination center in Ludwigslust.

It is a scandal that German and European companies are being sanctioned by the USA if they take part in a project that has been approved by the rule of law.

The US sanctions are economic sanctions.

"America wants to bring its American fracking gas onto the market and that's why our companies are being sanctioned," said Schwesig.

The federal government is therefore called upon to speak to the new American administration so that these sanctions can be lifted.

Maas made it clear on Monday that he was still hoping for an amicable settlement with Washington.

In the new “sanctions regime” on Nord Stream 2, a “consultation mechanism” was planned, he said.

"Before the sanctions are implemented, there will be government consultations."

It is important to talk to each other “to look for solutions that are acceptable to both sides”.

According to the Russian energy company Gazprom as the main investor, 94 percent of the pipeline has been completed.

The billion-dollar construction of the gas pipeline was interrupted shortly before completion at the end of 2019 after European companies bowed to pressure from the USA and pipelayers withdrew from the Baltic Sea.

The work on closing the gap is expected to start off the Danish island of Bornholm in mid-January.
