Schwerin / Berlin (dpa / mv) - Climate activists from Fridays for Future are planning several protests against a foundation with which the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania wants to support the construction of the Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea gas pipeline.

In a press release, the climate protection movement announced protests in front of the SPD party headquarters in Berlin, the Schwerin State Chancellery and the pipeline landing station in Lubmin.

"Gas is not a sustainable source of energy," said Theresia Crone from Fridays for Future Schwerin, explaining the protests.

In terms of climate protection, it is not a bridging technology either.

Last week, the Schwerin state parliament cleared the way for the establishment of a state-owned environmental foundation.

The foundation, which is oriented towards the common good, aims to promote projects in the field of environmental, nature and climate protection, but also to be able to be commercially active.

The foundation plans to buy components and machines that are essential for the completion of the gas pipeline.

This is intended to circumvent threatened US sanctions against companies involved in the construction of the line as far as possible.

Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) had repeatedly presented gas as a necessary transition technology for the energy transition.
