Berlin (dpa) - The former Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia, Bernhard Vogel (CDU), has spoken out in favor of Armin Laschet as the new CDU federal chairman.

"I advocate that the CDU is led by a chairman who has successfully passed election campaigns, who has government experience and who on the one hand continues the successful policy of Angela Merkel, but on the other hand dares a new beginning," the 88-year-old told the newspapers the Funke media group.

That is why he supports the NRW Prime Minister.

The decision on the new CDU boss is to be made on January 16 at an online party conference with 1001 delegates.

Other candidates besides Laschet are Friedrich Merz and Norbert Röttgen.

At the same time, Vogel thinks it is conceivable that CSU boss Markus Söder could become the Union's candidate for chancellor. "Of course, Markus Söder is one of those who I can imagine as the Union's candidate for chancellor," he said: "The newly elected CDU chairman and CSU boss Markus Söder will decide together. What matters is who has the better chance of becoming Federal Chancellor. " The general election is on September 26th.
