Erfurt (dpa / th) - Low energy costs and the reduction in VAT have dampened the inflation rate in Thuringia last year.

The State Office for Statistics announced on Tuesday in Erfurt that consumer prices were only 0.9 percent higher compared to the previous year.

The prices for household energy and fuels would have had a significant impact on the inflation rate in 2020 with a minus of 4.3 percent.

The biggest decrease compared to 2019 was recorded for heating oil (minus 20.6 percent).

According to statisticians, fuels were offered 9.5 percent cheaper, district heating 5.1 percent and the prices for solid fuels fell 1.8 percent.

In contrast, electricity with a plus of 5.7 percent and gas (plus 0.6 percent) became more expensive.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages, which are said to account for around 10 percent of total household spending, also rose in 2020 by an average of 2.8 percent.

Compared to 2019, fruit (plus 9.6 percent), meat and meat products (plus 6.1 percent) as well as dairy products and eggs (plus 1.8 percent) were significantly more expensive.
