11 January 2021 Schools have been reopened today in only three regions, namely in Valle d'Aosta, Abruzzo and Tuscany (50% of the over 166,000 upper secondary school students in the classroom), while in Trentino Alto Adige they had already reopened on 7 January last.

Everything was ready for the return of high school students to 50% in attendance but, said the Minister of Education Lucia Azzolina, it was the Regions that decided to postpone the date of the reopening of the schools again, between January 18 and February 1.

A decision that provoked a strong reaction from the students who, in addition to organizing a Dad strike, tired of teaching from home, asking to be able to return to the desks, in the classroom, launched a series of protests and demonstrations, to which they joined. also teachers, from North to South in many cities: Milan, Parma, Florence, Rome, Viterbo, Pescara, Ancona and others.

The protests will go on all week.

Basilicata is the last region in order of time to have decided to suspend face-to-face lessons at least until the first of February, as did Friuli Venezia Giulia, Marche, Sardinia, Veneto, Calabria and Sicily.

Distance learning until January 18, however, in Lazio, Liguria, Molise, Piedmont and Puglia.

We'll see.

And on January 25, students from Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy and Umbria could, but it is not clear, return to class.

The mobilization restarts in various Italian cities

The mobilization of the school sector in various Italian cities therefore starts again to ask for the opening in safety as a priority.

Headmasters and sit-ins were organized in front of many institutes with students also abstaining from Dad, distance learning.

"You can't keep everything open, while the school has always been closed for a year now", says the "Priority to School" committee which is one of the organizers of the mobilization, hoping that the sector is financed so that it can have more space, more staff , to reopen the infirmaries, carry out regular health screening of the school community (teachers, Ata, students) and "include, as a priority category, high-risk school staff in phase 1 of the vaccination agenda".

Abruzzo.

About 29,000 high school students return to class

Today half of Abruzzo high school students, that is, according to estimates, about 29,000 pupils, after two months of online lessons, have returned to school in person.

Abruzzo is one of the few Regions that has decided to reopen schools for upper secondary schools from 11 January, alternating 50% with distance learning.

A decision linked to the fact that the Rt index is less than 1.

"On the other hand - says the regional councilor for education Pietro Quaresimale -, as decided by the government, Abruzzo returns to the yellow zone with bars and restaurants open and therefore it seemed appropriate to reopen the high schools with an effort particular organizational structure on the part of the regional structures that deal with transport and student mobility. In this sense - continues Quaresimale - the frequency of buses on the lines most frequented by students has been increased with the consequent increase in the number of vehicles in circulation. with the prefectures, the transport plans also in relation to the staggering of the return to school, paying particular attention to areas with high frequency intensity ".

Today resumed in Campania but only up to second grade

Schools in Campania reopen today, but only for younger students.

This morning the bell rang only for the students of the nursery and the first two classes of the primary who, on 7 and 8 January, even at the end of the Christmas holidays, had continued with the lessons in dad.

The last order signed by the President of the Region Vincenzo De Luca established the shooting schedule with face-to-face lessons.

From January 18 the activity in presence resumes also in the third, fourth and fifth grades of the primary and from January 25 the middle and high school students return to the classroom.

But it is, at least for the moment, a mere indication.

All decisions will in fact be taken at the end of specific meetings of the regional crisis unit in which the evolution of the epidemiological data will be taken into account.

It starts again in Calabria after pronunciation of the Tar, at the start of middle and elementary schools

Skepticism and even concern.

These are the feelings that the parents of Catanzaro live on the day of the reopening of the middle and elementary schools after the decision of the TAR which suspended the effectiveness of the closing order issued by the acting president of the Region, Nino Spirlì.

There is no shortage of those who see the return of their children to school as a sign of restart and trust in the future, but overall for the mothers and fathers of the little ones, fears prevail over other considerations.

Azzolina: "The government has done everything possible to reopen it"

"For my part there is no controversy with any regional president. But the facts remain. On December 23rd we signed an agreement with all the Regions, which guaranteed us a 50% return of high school students. A huge job has started, we have staggered schedules, many more buses have been put in. I think there are regions that have worked very well, like Tuscany. I did everything I could to do, together with the government. Now it is the Regions that have the possibility to reopen them or not. Now I ask the regional presidents to treat the school like other productive activities, because the costs of closure are still very high ".

The Minister of Education Lucia Azzolina spoke this morning on Radio1, during the program 'Tutti in classe'.

"It is difficult for students to understand all this, I understand them - commented the minister - School is an essential public service. At their age, if they had taken away my school I would have been angry too. But I have a duty to tell them that the government did all it could. "

Azzolina then added that distance learning has worked in an emergency, but that, in the long run, it is leading to an increase in early school leaving.

"Students need to vent their sociability, so they might as well do it in an environment like the classroom - he added - Zero risk does not exist in any area, but everyone has now recognized that within schools the risk is very low. The school has been very well organized this summer, and now we have also worked hard to contain the risk outside the school ".

Maturity, "we will soon make a decision"

"We asked the students to make proposals like last year. We will make a decision shortly. The kids need certainty, at least about maturity. And the ministry must give them to them" he says the minister.

"Competition will resume"

"The extraordinary competition will resume. About 75% of the tests have already been carried out and the Ministry of Education has set up the computer systems to start correcting the tests as soon as possible. As soon as the situation allows it, we will resume, they are missing only four days of rehearsals. Then the ordinary competition will start "says the minister speaking of the extraordinary competition which began on 22 October and was interrupted due to the increase in infections.

"I understand the frustrations of the kids. If they had taken away the #school at their age, I probably wouldn't be here. The schools are ready to start again but the Regions have the possibility of reopening or not"
