Oberhof (dpa) - Former world champion Simon Schempp has lost his place in the German biathlete World Cup team after only two starts.

As the German Ski Association announced on Monday, the 32-year-old Swabian will no longer compete in the second part of the World Cup in Oberhof, Thuringia, from Wednesday.

At the Rennsteig, the two-time Olympic runner-up only finished 58th (sprint) and 45th (pursuit) in the first races of the year.

As a result, the former German number one could not recommend itself for further assignments and should also miss the world championship in just under a month in Pokljuka, Slovenia.

In addition to Schempp, Lucas Fratzscher will also be missing, but Roman Rees and Johannes Kühn are again there.

The men's team will be completed on the 2023 World Cup routes by Olympic champions Arnd Peiffer, Erik Lesser, Benedikt Doll and Philipp Horn.

The women's team continues with Maren Hammerschmidt, Denise Herrmann, Janina Hettich, Vanessa Hinz, Franziska Preuß and Anna Weidel.

Actually, this World Cup week would have gone to Ruhpolding, but the IBU World Association decided to hold a double event in Oberhof due to the corona pandemic.

The men's sprint starts on Wednesday (2.30 p.m. / ARD and Eurosport).

After the women's sprint on Thursday, there will be relays and mass starts until Sunday.

The Germans clearly have to improve after failing to take the podium in Oberhof for the first time since 2015 in the first week.
