Berlin (dpa / bb) - In view of the continued large number of new corona infections, Berlin will probably also introduce a new rule to restrict freedom of movement to a radius of 15 kilometers from the city limits.

"The Senate is examining how it can implement the regulation coordinated with Brandenburg for Berlin," said Senate spokeswoman Melanie Reinsch on Monday upon request.

"The details will be finalized by tomorrow's Senate meeting."

Reinsch pointed out that in the course of the lockdown, which was extended to the end of January, people in Berlin are only allowed to leave their apartments for good reason.

"That already applies today."

For residents of Brandenburg's Corona hotspots, tourist travel and sports outside a radius of 15 kilometers around their district or their independent city have been prohibited since Saturday.

This applies to more than 200 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within a week.

Shopping and visits to the doctor are also allowed outside this radius.

The regulation is based on an agreement between the federal and state governments to extend the lockdown.

The Berlin Senate did not initially decide on it at its special session last Wednesday and announced that it would coordinate with Brandenburg.

Most recently, the incidence in Berlin, i.e. the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days, again approached 200. In the meantime, it has recently been significantly lower.
