Berlin (dpa) - The culture ministers of the federal states are again discussing the decision in favor of Chemnitz as the European capital of culture on Monday in Berlin.

The round surprisingly did not initially confirm the jury's decision in December.

Now a conversation with the jury about the criticized award procedure should take place.

The move preserved the chances of a desired unanimous decision.

In a vote for Chemnitz in December, Bavaria is said to have announced an abstention, at the time still chairing the round of culture ministers.

Nuremberg, along with other cities, came out empty-handed with the jury's vote for Chemnitz.

At the end of October, the Saxon city prevailed against the cities of Hanover, Hildesheim, Magdeburg and Nuremberg, which were still represented on the shortlist.

The European selection jury announced the corresponding recommendation for Chemnitz.

Previously, the competitors Dresden, Gera and Zittau were eliminated.

The recommendation of the jury must be converted into a formal appointment by the federal and state governments.

The second European Capital of Culture in 2025 is Slovenia.

The youngest European Capital of Culture from Germany was Essen with the Ruhr area (2010).

Weimar (1999) and West Berlin (1988) had already received awards.
