Frankfurt / Main (dpa) - In November 2020, Germany's mechanical engineering companies recorded an increase in orders from Germany and abroad for the first time since the beginning of last year.

Adjusted for price increases (real), orders increased by 5 percent compared to the previous year, as the industry association VDMA announced on Monday in Frankfurt.

"The result is gratifying, even if the weak previous year makes a major contribution," said VDMA chief economist Ralph Wiechers.

Now it depends on whether the positive trend of the past few months can continue.

"Because mechanical and plant engineering is not immune to setbacks in this fragile environment," said Wiechers.

The corona virus had recently spread strongly again.

In many countries, public life was again restricted.

Domestic business saw a slight increase of 1 percent in November 2020.

7 percent more orders for machines and systems from German production were received from abroad.

In the three-month period from September to November 2020, which is less prone to fluctuations, incoming orders fell by 2 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

For the Corona crisis year 2020, the export-oriented German key industry recently expected a slump in production of 14 percent.

A recovery and growth of 4 percent is expected in the current year.

According to the association, mechanical engineering has more than a million employees in Germany.
