Kiel (dpa / lno) - Schleswig-Holstein benefited massively from negative interest rates in 2020 and received 74 million euros last year.

"Of course, income from negative interest rates is not a permanent financial instrument, but it helps us in the current difficult budget situation," said Finance Minister Monika Heinold (Greens) on Monday.

From 2015 to 2019, the country recorded income totaling 35 million euros due to negative interest rates.

The "Kieler Nachrichten" had previously reported on it.

The state government has reserved 100 million euros for the renovation of the Schleswig-Holstein University Medical Center (UKSH).

In addition to the income from negative interest, the remaining 26 million euros come from interest management.

"Instead of carrying 100 million euros to the bank, we were able to reserve these funds for the redevelopment of the UKSH," said Heinold.

The Ministry of Finance benefited from the low interest rate environment and correspondingly favorable financing terms in the context of borrowing.

The return on loans concluded over the past three years was therefore an average of 0.24 percent, with an average term of 7.5 years.

The country also took out loans with negative returns.

According to the ministry, the financing terms for a ten-year bond are currently -0.3 percent.
