Erfurt (dpa / th) - Due to the high number of infections in the corona pandemic, the Thuringian Greens parliamentary group has spoken out in favor of postponing the parliamentary elections that have been planned for April.

In view of the situation, it is a “command of common sense to rethink the new election date that has been targeted so far,” said Greens parliamentary leader Astrid Rothe-Beinlich on Monday.

In Thuringia, the incidence value is currently in all urban and rural districts with more than 200 infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days.

She pointed out that after the state parliament was dissolved, the district associations of all parties running for election would have to invite district assemblies to elect delegates.

In addition, lists would have to be drawn up at state party conferences.

«Election campaigns also live from direct communication with citizens.

And experience shows that around 30,000 election workers are needed to run a state election smoothly.

None of this is currently responsible, ”emphasized Rothe-Beinlich.

The chairmen of the parliamentary groups and the party leaders of the Left, SPD, Greens and the CDU want to meet on Thursday to discuss the dissolution of the state parliament and new elections.

After the Thuringian government crisis, with the surprising election of FDP politician Thomas Kemmerich as Prime Minister, the four had agreed on a stability mechanism in order to be able to form majorities in the state parliament.

However, the agreement also meant that it would expire after a budget had been adopted and that the parties involved would then agree to dissolve the state parliament so that a new state parliament could be elected on April 25th.

The four groups would have to come to an agreement to postpone this planned date.

The Greens Group announced that it would also support maintaining the date, should this be the result of the negotiations.

A two-thirds majority is necessary for the dissolution of parliament in Thuringia.
