The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Anwar Gargash, welcomed the US administration’s decision to classify the Houthi militia as a terrorist organization and to place its leaders on terrorist lists. He said in a tweet on the social networking site “Twitter” yesterday, that “the Houthi militia coup against the state and its institutions and Yemeni society and its fabric. Social and civil, sparked violence and chaos, and led to the tragic deterioration of the humanitarian situation in fraternal Yemen ».

The US government had announced that the United States would classify the Houthi militia on its black list of "terrorist" groups, and the decision will take effect on January 19.

In a statement, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the decision aims to strengthen "deterrence against the harmful activities of the Iranian regime supporting the Houthis, in the face of the government of the recognized president, Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi."

The American blacklist included three Houthi leaders, who are the leader of the militia called "Abdul-Malik Al-Houthi," in addition to each of "Abdul Khaleq Badr Al-Din Al-Houthi, and Abdullah Yahya Al-Hakim."

"The decision was taken to hold the Houthis accountable for their terrorist acts, including cross-border attacks that threaten the civilian population, infrastructure and commercial shipping," Pompeo said.

Pompeo confirmed that the US government will work to strengthen efforts to reach a peaceful solution to the Yemeni crisis.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia expressed the Kingdom's government welcoming the decision of the US administration, and the ministry expressed its aspiration that this classification would contribute to putting an end to the actions of the terrorist Houthi militia and their supporters, and stopping the supply of this terrorist organization with missiles, drones, specific weapons and money to finance its war effort, and to target the people. This classification will lead to support and success of the existing political efforts, and will force the leaders of the Iranian-backed Houthi militias to seriously return to the table of political consultations.

The Yemeni government welcomed the US State Department’s decision, and the Yemeni Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs said, in a statement, that the decision “is consistent with the Yemeni government’s demands to punish these terrorist militias.”
