Düsseldorf (dpa) - The President of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland, Manfred Rekowski, has called for people to stand up for the weakest against the backdrop of the Corona crisis.

They would be particularly hard hit by the pandemic, he said on Monday at the synod of the regional church in Düsseldorf.

This applies to Germany, "but even more so to the whole world".

Many people in poorer countries lacked important income because trade routes and tourist flows were interrupted.

"The Corona crisis will plunge many people in economically weak countries into further poverty," said Rekowski.

In addition, refugees currently have to live on the fringes of the EU “under inhumane conditions”.

This is not to be tolerated.

The pandemic affects everyone, but in very different ways.

"We mustn't lose sight of the people who have already lost everything," emphasized Rekowski.

The Evangelical Church in the Rhineland holds its synod until Friday.

Due to the corona pandemic, it is taking place completely digitally as a video conference for the first time.

The second largest Protestant church in Germany with 2.45 million members comprises parts of the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse and Saarland.
