Berlin (dpa) - The culture ministers of the federal states unanimously confirmed the decision for Chemnitz as the European Capital of Culture during a video switch on Monday.

This was then communicated in Berlin.

Surprisingly, the round did not initially waved through the jury's decision as planned in December.

First there should be a discussion with the jury about the award procedure that has come under criticism.

At the end of October, the Saxon city prevailed against the cities of Hanover, Hildesheim, Magdeburg and Nuremberg that were still on the shortlist.

The European selection jury announced the corresponding recommendation for Chemnitz.

The competitors Dresden, Gera and Zittau had already been eliminated.
