Garmisch-Partenkirchen (dpa) - 2020 has set the previous heat record on Germany's highest mountain.

As the environmental research station Schneefernerhaus announced on Monday, the average temperature on the 2962 meter high Zugspitze last year was 2.1 degrees above the long-term average.

"If you look at the entire past year, you can see that within the 120-year measurement period, the year 2020 together with 2011 was the warmest ever," explained Inga Beck from the research station.

In the previous heat record year 2011, the mean value had already been exceeded by 2.1 degrees.

The German Weather Service has been recording temperature data on the Zugspitze since 1900.

The peak in 2020 was 15 degrees Celsius on August 6, the historic summer high of 17.9 degrees was measured in July 1957.
