Before boarding the Sriwijaya Air SJ 182, Indah sent a photo home to her family, taken from inside the plane.

The picture shows the rain pouring down outside.

In her very last text message, Indah asked relatives to pray that she and the others on board would have a safe journey: "Pray for us".

A moment later, the plane took off, for its very last journey.

Has had several fatal accidents

62 people were on board the plane.

Two black boxes have now been found in the sea off Jakarta, but it will probably take months before investigations of the boxes can possibly provide answers as to why the plane crashed.

However, the accident raises new questions about flight safety in Indonesia.

The newspaper The Guardian writes, for example, with reference to the Aviation Safety Network's database, that no other country in the world has had as many fatalities in aviation accidents in the last decade as Indonesia.

From 2007 to 2018, Indonesian airlines were also ported by the EU from flights to and from Europe, due to lack of security.

In 2018, however, all Indonesian companies were removed from the EU's blacklist.

They were judged to have improved enough to be able to fly to Europe again.

Bad with trained staff

The accident with the plane from Sriwijaya Air is the first in the country since October 2018 when a plane from Lion Air crashed, also in Lake Java.

Also in that case it was a Boeing 737 but of the newer model 737 Max 8. 189 people died.

Indonesia, with its thousands of islands, is heavily dependent on air traffic.

There have been concerns that the growing aviation industry has had difficulty finding a sufficient number of trained personnel.

"Nervous and a lump in the stomach"

The plane in Jakarta was half an hour late due to heavy rain.

Since I myself have flown almost annually in Indonesia for the past twenty years, I have several times sat at Soekarno-Hatta Airport and waited with the rain rushing outside.

At the same time as the wind whipped the windows in the waiting hall.

It has been uncomfortable.

Nervous and a lump in the stomach.

Several times I have thought “May no one make the assessment that it is possible to fly now.

In this weather."

Investigators will now seek the answer to why the plane from Sriwijaya Air chose to take off despite bad weather and what then went wrong.
