Erfurt (dpa / th) - The winter scenery again lured many families and cross-country skiers to the Thuringian Forest at the weekend - but the feared rush did not materialize.

"The appeals from the winter sports resorts and the controls obviously worked," said a police spokesman on Sunday in Hildburghausen.

At the weekend, the police and law enforcement officers checked parking lots and streets in the Rennsteig region to prevent chaotic conditions with parked escape routes and driveways.

The places in the Thuringian Forest had been overrun by day trippers in the days before.

Oberhof, where the Biathlon World Cup was held without spectators this weekend, is closed to day visitors.

The public parking lots are not accessible for day trippers and the police regulate the access to the city.

In other regions as well, such as the Rhön, public parking spaces have been closed in order to limit the number of day tourists.

In order to get the high numbers of infections under control, the southern Thuringian district of Hildburghausen completely isolates itself from winter sports visitors.

From next Monday, day trips for the purpose of sporting activity and exercise in the fresh air in the district area are prohibited.

The Masserberg excursion destination, popular with winter sports fans, is located in the region.

With blue skies and plenty of snow, many people went on a toboggan run or a winter walk in the Rennsteig region around Neuhaus on Sunday.

"Although some day trippers had to be turned away at full parking spaces, the situation was manageable," said the mayor of Neuhaus am Rennweg, Uwe Scheler.

There were no major violations.

In Steinach, numerous cross-country skiers took their laps around the Fellberg in the groomed trails.

“There were also a lot of families tobogganing there, but the people were well distributed,” said the operator of the Silbersattel ski arena, Axel Müller.
