According to the institute, 16,946 cases of COVID-19 and 465 deaths were detected in the country per day.

In total, 1,908,527 people fell ill in the country, 40,343 patients died.

Earlier, the German authorities extended the quarantine in the country until January 31.

Chancellor Angela Merkel said the next weeks of winter will be the most difficult for Germany since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

As the Minister of Health of Germany Jens Spahn noted, more than 500 thousand people have already been vaccinated in the country.
