Neuwied (dpa / lrs) - The Neuwied Zoo, which is financially stricken due to Corona, sees itself saved for the time being after donations and income of a good 250,000 euros.

"In my wildest dreams I could not have imagined that our call for help a week ago would trigger such a response and at the same time a real wave of donations," said the director of the largest zoo in Rhineland-Palatinate, which was closed due to corona, Mirko Thiel, on Sunday .

The chairman of the zoo support association, the mayor of Neuwied Jan Einig (CDU), spoke of "many hundreds of donors".

The financial situation has relaxed to such an extent that the zoo support association currently “does not want to take advantage of any additional special funding in the form of a rescue package from the state, as has been under discussion for days”.

In an email to Clemens Hoch, the head of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Chancellery in Mainz, Mayor Einig said in his own words that the planned round table with the country on this Monday was no longer necessary.
