Hilpoltstein (dpa / lby) - Sparrow and tree sparrow, great tit and blackbird: These bird species were counted particularly frequently in the hands-on campaign “Hour of Winter Birds” by the Bavarian State Association for Bird Protection (LBV) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU).

During the “Hour of Winter Birds”, the “largest citizen science hands-on campaign” in Bavaria, citizens can count birds and thus help explain “winter natural phenomena”, as LBV biologist Annika Lange said.

According to the interim assessment of the 16th edition of the campaign, the sparrow, the tree sparrow and the great tit are the most frequently counted winter birds in Bavaria.

In particular, the increased sightings of the fieldfare in northern and western Bavaria are surprising.

Usually she just makes it into the top 30 most observed winter birds.

This year, however, due to a good fruit year, she was among the top 15. According to the LBV, a record participation in the “Hour of the Winter Birds” is currently emerging.

The corona lockdown had the effect that people “have the opportunity to discover nature on their own doorstep”.

The participation campaign runs until January 18th.
