Berlin (dpa / bb) - To combat the corona pandemic, even stricter contact restrictions will apply from this Sunday than before.

Private meetings are only allowed with your own family or shared apartment and at most one other person.

Additional children are not allowed unless the meeting is with single parents.

This is intended to further reduce private contacts.

Until now, there was an upper limit of five people from two households for private meetings in Berlin, not counting children.

However, it is also known that such private meetings are not specifically controlled, nor that public order offices or the police can even do this in such a large city.

Due to the recently approved extension of the lockdown to January 31, most shops, schools and kindergartens as well as restaurants, pubs, sports halls and cultural and event facilities will remain closed.

People should only leave their homes for a “valid reason”, such as shopping and being outdoors.

Drinking alcohol in public places outside is prohibited.

Overnight stays in hotels are also largely prohibited.

From Monday, school lessons are only available for the final grades 10, 12 and 13 at grammar schools and secondary schools in small groups.

The general start of school, originally planned for January 11th and then for January 18th, has been postponed.

Now the Senate wants to decide on January 19 how the elementary schools will continue on January 25.

On Saturday, the AfD and FDP demanded school lessons again as soon as possible under certain security measures.

"Berlin needs open schools in order to avert the impending educational emergency," said the AfD.

The FDP announced: "There were good reasons to reopen the schools earlier."

For the youngest students in particular, teaching by the teacher is very important.

Measures against corona infections are a prerequisite: two quick tests per week for teachers and students as well as FFP-2 masks for teachers and Plexiglas on the teacher's desk, according to the FDP education politician Paul Fresdorf.

"With these precautions, half-class lessons could start earlier."

Education researchers had also emphasized that real school lessons for elementary school students cannot be replaced.

After protests by the GEW teachers' union, some school principals, student representatives and some of the parents, Senator for Education Sandra Scheeres (SPD) rowed back on Friday and postponed the planned reopening of schools for grades 1 to 9 at least until January 25.

Until then, the parents in particular have to look after the children and convey the learning material.
