Iran’s Supreme Leader: Only when the US lifts sanctions on Iran can it make sense for the US to return to the Iran nuclear agreement

Xinhua News Agency, Tehran, January 8th (Reporter Xia Chen) Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei said on the 8th that the United States will only be able to lift sanctions against Iran and return to the comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue.

Khamenei said that if the United States does not lift sanctions against Iran and returns to the Iran nuclear agreement, it is not only meaningless and even “harmful”.

Khamenei also said that Iran will not weaken its support for allies in West Asia.

Iran should maintain its military strength and not allow “the situation where it is hit by the enemy and cannot fight back”.

According to Iranian media reports, Iran has recently demonstrated its military power to the outside world through exercises and other means.

Hussein Salami, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran, recently stated that Iran is ready to respond to possible military actions by the enemy.

In July 2015, Iran reached a comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue with the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany.

According to the agreement, Iran promised to limit its nuclear program and the international community lifted sanctions against Iran.

The US government unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear agreement in May 2018, and then restarted and added a series of sanctions against Iran.

Since May 2019, Iran has gradually suspended the implementation of some of the terms of the agreement, but promised that the measures taken are "reversible."
