After an interview of about an hour, Jean-Yves Le Drian underlined that his country is determined to continue to support Burkina Faso in the field of security and in its economic and social development policy.

In 2020, France's humanitarian aid to Burkina Faso amounted to 10 million euros and this will be repeated this year, the French minister promised.

Regarding the

extradition of François Compaoré

as part of the investigation into the murder of journalist Norbert Zongo, he maintains that France is awaiting the decision of the Council of State.

“

We have initiated the extradition of François Compaoré, the extradition decree was signed by the Prime Minister and the Keeper of the Seals last February.

The person concerned appealed to the Council of State which will itself rule on these principles, but France's position is very clear.

"

On the security front, the

commitments made in Pau

in 2020 have made it possible to obtain results on the ground in the fight against terrorism.

And decisions must be taken for their consolidation.

We have had successes and in particular in the area of the three borders.

Ultimately, the security of the Sahel countries must be ensured by the Sahel countries themselves.

And therefore the gradual increase in strength of the joint force must contribute to this.

But at the same time, we can see that if we do not bring together

the four pillars

in a determined manner in the coming months, then the weaknesses that we have observed recently in Niger could recur.

 "

The continuation of the commitments made in Pau will be considered during the next meeting between France, the G5 Sahel countries and international partners, according to Jean-Yves Le Drian.
