Gifhorn (dpa / lni) - The district of Gifhorn in eastern Lower Saxony has exceeded the critical value of 200 new infections with the corona virus within the past seven days per 100,000 inhabitants.

As the State Health Office reported in Hanover on Saturday, the so-called seven-day incidence there was 226.0 on Saturday.

The day before, this was 179.0 cases.

It is the first time that this value has been torn into hotspots in Lower Saxony for the restriction of freedom of movement decided upon in the federal-state consultations, as a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Social Affairs said.

From a value of 200, the new Corona Ordinance, which applies from this Sunday until January 31, enables municipalities to restrict the residents' freedom of movement to a radius of 15 kilometers.

Exceptions are only made for compelling reasons such as medical emergencies.

Unlike other federal states, Lower Saxony does not oblige the districts to take such a step, but leaves it up to the municipalities.

How the district of Gifhorn will proceed was initially not known.
