The Japanese government strongly protested, saying it could not accept the Korean court's ruling to compensate victims of Japanese military comfort women.



"We are very sorry that such a ruling came out," Kato Katsunobu, the Japanese Minister of State, said at a regular press conference today (8th).



He commented that the Japanese government has repeatedly expressed its position that the case should be dismissed due to the sovereignty exemption applied. He commented that the ruling denied the principle of sovereignty exemption under international law.



Secretary Kato said that the issue of claims between South Korea and Japan was resolved through the Japan-Korea claim agreement in 1965, and in the case of the comfort women issue of the Japanese military, "a final and irreversible solution was confirmed between the two governments" in an agreement with the foreign ministers of Japan in 2015 Emphasized.



Mr. Kato said, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Akiba called the Korean Ambassador Nam Kwan-pyo to Japan to explain this position and strongly protested.



In addition, he added that he did not intend to appeal the ruling that was defeated in the first trial because the Japanese government cannot admit to submitting to the Korean jurisdiction under the principle of sovereignty exemption.
