Mainz (dpa / lrs) - In some municipalities in Rhineland-Palatinate, Christmas trees will not be picked up this year due to corona.
At least not, as usual, from the youth fire brigade or from associations that use it to collect donations.
In the Rhine-Palatinate district, for example, some clubs have decided against the traditional Christmas tree collection due to the corona pandemic, as can be seen on the district's homepage.
Instead, shredded trees and branches should be disposed of in the organic waste bin.
Alternatively, they could be taken to the municipal recycling centers, some of which offer extended opening hours.
In two districts of Bad Kreuznach, employees of the building yard are exceptionally collecting the disused trees this year.
Otherwise, clubs were also responsible for this, but they would not have been able to comply with the applicable Corona requirements, said a spokeswoman for the city.
The same applies to Landau, Wasserliesch in the district of Trier-Saarburg and Helferskirchen in the Westerwaldkreis and Stadecken-Elsheim (district of Mainz-Bingen), where the youth fire brigades forego the tradition.
It is not a nationwide problem, explained Agneta Psczolla from the Rhineland-Palatinate Association of Municipalities and Cities.
Those who are not able to dispose of the tree themselves can get support from neighborhood help.

Many of the cities in Rhineland-Palatinate offer a collection of the Christmas trees, including Kaiserslautern, Ludwigshafen, Koblenz, Mainz, Trier, Landau and Speyer.
According to a spokeswoman for the public utility company, they will be taken to a company that produces wood chips.
If you prefer to transport your tree to the waste disposal yard yourself in the car, you have to make an appointment via the Stadtwerke website.
In Trier, the Christmas trees are used in biomass power plants or in agriculture.
The city of Mainz also states that it has the trees processed as compost or for heating.
