In Hamburg, more people will now receive a corona vaccination from the vaccine that is already available.

As the spokesman for the health authority of the German press agency said on Friday, six instead of five doses will be taken from the vials in which the Biontech / Pfizer vaccine is filled.

"On the basis of information from the Federal Ministry of Health and the corresponding approval, Hamburg will now begin to use the sixth dose available in order not to waste any vaccine quantities," said Martin Helfrich.

A spokesman for the Federal Ministry of Health said shortly afterwards that the European Medicines Agency (EMA) had approved that six instead of five doses can now be drawn from an ampoule.

According to Helfrich, the vials are "overfilled" by the manufacturer.

"According to the manufacturer, with the Biontech vaccine it is possible, with optimal handling, to take not just five but six doses for the vaccination."

Since the approval was only given for the removal of five cans, the remaining amount had to be disposed of with the bottles, as the head of the central vaccination center in the Hamburg exhibition halls, Dirk Heinrich, told the dpa.

He spoke of "wonderful news".

"That means we can vaccinate 20 percent more people," he said.

With the capacity that has now been gained, more appointments for vaccination could be allocated in the vaccination center.

Meanwhile, the Hamburg health authority reported 537 new corona cases on Friday, 104 more than the day before.

The seven-day incidence is thus 149.1.

On Thursday, the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants was 137.1.

The RKI puts the number of people who died in connection with a coronavirus infection at 763, 38 more than the day before.

According to the health authority, another vaccine delivery arrived in Hamburg on Friday.

"As a result of this delivery, we now have around 30,000 vaccine doses in stock," said Helfrich.

The vaccine is still in short supply: “Furthermore, weekly deliveries are not to be expected;

at the same time, from the third week of January, the first vaccinated people will have to be supplied with the second dose, so that the need also increases, ”said Helfrich.

"We remain urgently dependent on an expansion of the delivery volume."

When it comes to the vaccination rate, Hamburg is still in the lower third in a country comparison.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), 4.6 hamburgers per 1000 inhabitants had been vaccinated by Friday (Thursday: 3.8).

The national average is 5.7 vaccinations per 1000 inhabitants.
