Berlin (dpa / bb) - The well-known Berlin crime hotspots have remained attractions for drug dealers, pickpockets, shoplifters, fraudsters and thugs even in the Corona year 2020.

In some places, only the number of certain crimes such as shoplifting or crimes, the victims of which are mainly tourists, fell significantly.

This emerges from a response from the Senate Interior Administration to a request from the left.

Last year, the police counted more than 5,000 crimes at Alexanderplatz and around Görlitzer Park in Kreuzberg, and around 4,000 offenses at Hermannplatz and Hermannstrasse in Neukölln.

Above all, it was mainly about shoplifting and pickpocketing, drug trafficking, assault, fare dodging, robbery and resistance to police officers.

Around 3300 crimes were recorded at Kottbusser Tor, 2100 on Warschauer Strasse in Friedrichshain and around 1000 crimes on houses on Rigaer Strasse, some of which were occupied by left-wing radicals.

The greatest decline can be seen in thefts, robberies and drug offenses on Warschauer Strasse and the adjacent RAW site.

There are numerous pubs and clubs that are frequented by young people from the outskirts and tourists on weekends.

Because of the corona pandemic, there were far fewer people there last year.

There were significantly fewer shoplifts and pickpockets on Alexanderplatz - the shops there had been closed for a long time.

The seven places have been classified by the police as “fraught with crime”.

This allows police officers to control people there without any reason, which is otherwise not possible.

The Senate Administration also announced that the crime-prone area of Görlitzer Park had already been expanded in April 2020 to include parts of the adjacent Wrangelkiez towards the Schlesisches Tor.

The reason is a "significant increase in significant criminal offenses (...) that particularly impair the population's sense of security, for example robbery and offensive drug trafficking".

However, the exact boundaries of the area defined in this way are not disclosed, so that the perpetrators cannot simply post themselves at the boundaries.
