Lärz / Wittstock (dpa) - More than a month after the avian influenza outbreak in a laying hen operation in Krümmel near Lärz (Mecklenburg Lake District), the associated restrictions have been lifted.

The district of Mecklenburg Lake District announced on Thursday that poultry farmers in the south of Mecklenburg and in the north of Brandenburg are concerned.

This means that poultry, meat and eggs can once again be transported into and out of the restricted areas.

At the beginning of December, 29,000 hens were killed in the laying hen operation to contain the animal disease.

The aggressive pathogen H5N8 was found in sick animals in the stable.

This highly pathogenic variant of avian influenza - also known as bird flu - occurs in domestic poultry with severe general symptoms.

It is not clear exactly how the pathogen, which is usually spread by wild birds during bird migration, got into the stables.

No other bird flu case had been found in the area where more than 600,000 chickens, ducks and other poultry are kept.

The district pointed out that there are still finds of migratory birds in the northeast, in which the avian influenza virus is found.

That is why the obligation to keep stables in high-risk areas with many lakes and on farms with more than 1000 animals continues to apply.
