January 07, 202 181 thousand infections and 15 thousand deaths.

This is the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on a planetary level in the last 24 hours, from 7 am yesterday to the same time today.

The new coronavirus, since its appearance, has now caused a total of 87 million and 186 thousand infections, of which 1,883,761 proved to be lethal.

The United States remains by far the most affected nation with almost 21.3 million infections (of which 361,278 proved fatal).

In terms of infections, the ranking (limited to countries that have exceeded two million cases) continues with India (10.395 million), Brazil (7.8) Russia (3.2) Great Britain (2.8 ) France (2.7) Turkey (2.2) and Italy (2.2).

The situation changes if we look at the data relating to mortality.

In this case, Brazil ranks second with 198,974 deaths, followed by India with 150,336, Mexico with 129,987, and Great Britain (which yesterday exceeded a thousand deaths in 24 hours) with 77,470 victims and therefore precisely our country with 76,877.

France (66,699) and Russia (59,137) still follow.

Things change further if we observe a revealing parameter, namely that of the lethality rate in relation to the population.

In this case, unfortunately, it is Italy that dominates the ranking, which is by far the nation to record the most deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants relative to countries with over 6 million residents.

In our country, Covid has in fact killed 126 people per 100 thousand compared to 114 in Great Britain, 109 in the USA, 102 in Mexico, 99 in France and eleven in India.

Never so many deaths from coronavirus-related complications in the United States in 24 hours.

Johns Hopkins University confirms this, reporting 3,865 deaths on the last day.

It is the first time in the US that the threshold of 3,800 deaths from Covid-19 has been exceeded and the fifth time that the number of deaths exceeds 3,500 in the country most affected by the pandemic in the world.

All in the last three weeks.

Thus, the total number of people who have died after contracting the coronavirus in the United States rises to 361,278.

Regarding the infections, Johns Hopkins University reports a total of 21,305,026 in the US, 145 thousand on January 6 alone.

Over a thousand deaths in 24 hours in Germany

The Robert Koch Institut reported 26,391 new infections and 1,070 new deaths in 24 hours in Germany, in the daily Coronvirus bulletin.

The death toll was recorded on December 30, with 1,129 deaths.

In Germany, on January 5, it was decided to extend the hard lockdown until the end of the month.

The new increase in the numbers of Covid infections, after the decline seen during the Christmas holidays, could depend on the slowdown in the activity of the laboratories, reiterate the experts, who still believe it difficult to evaluate the data.

The incidence over seven days per 100 thousand inhabitants dropped to 121.8 infections, from the record of 197.6, recorded on 22 December last.

Japan, towards a state of emergency in Tokyo

The Japanese government is preparing to declare a new state of emergency in Tokyo and its suburbs in the face of the pandemic.

This state of emergency, much less restrictive than the one applied in April-May 2020 throughout the archipelago, should initially affect the capital and three adjacent regions for a month.

But at least one other region, that of Aichi (center), plans to ask to join the measures.

Greater Tokyo, home to nearly 37 million people, or 30% of the Japanese population, represents a significant percentage of the daily number of cases currently reported nationwide.

An official announcement by Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is expected today.

But Yasutoshi Nishimura, his minister responsible for the fight against Covid-19, anticipated the scope of the planned measures, recalling that the health system is "in critical condition" in Tokyo.

Tokyo recorded 2,447 new cases of coronavirus, exceeding two thousand infections for the first time.

Local media reported this, explaining that Prime Minister of Japan Yoshihide Suga is about to declare a state of emergency for the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Previously, the highest number of Covid-19 cases recorded in Tokyo was 1,591.

The broadcaster NHK reports 121 serious cases.
