Berlin (dpa / bb) - The tenants in Berlin will face massive increases in heating costs this year.

The reason for this is the nationwide CO2 tax of 25 euros per tonne of carbon dioxide emitted since January 1st, the Berlin tenants' association announced on Thursday.

Because landlords can allocate these to the additional costs, the tenants would have to foot the bill in the end.

Landlords would therefore have no incentive to invest in energy savings.

"This is climate policy nonsense that the tenants have to pay dearly," criticized the managing director of the tenants' association, Reiner Wild.

«We call on the federal government to change the operating costs regulation immediately and place the burden of CO2 pricing on the landlords.

Because only they can sustainably reduce energy consumption by making changes to the building and heating system. "

According to the tenants' association, heating costs rise by 7.9 cents per liter or 0.6 cents per kilowatt hour due to the CO2 pricing.

"For Berlin this means that tenants in a gas-heated apartment have to pay an average of 52.66 euros more a year, tenants in an oil-heated apartment even 88.20 euros," said Wild.

Overall, as a result of the new levy, Berlin tenants would have to shoulder additional costs of 43 million euros this year, without the landlords having an incentive to improve the heating system.

"The agreed relief through housing benefit is just a drop in the ocean, because only a few households receive this support."
