From Jimmy Carter to Barack Obama, including George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, all the former presidents of the United States strongly condemned the violence perpetrated by supporters of Donald Trump on Wednesday night in Washington.

Some do not spare the current White House guest.

The former American presidents in their entirety, from Jimmy Carter to Barack Obama, on Wednesday strongly condemned the violence which broke out on Capitol Hill, described as "shame", "tragedy", while denouncing the attitude of Donald Trump accused of to have "lit the insurrectionary fuse".

"The fuse has been lit by Donald Trump"

"History will remember the violence today on Capitol Hill, encouraged by a president who relentlessly lied about the outcome of an election, as a moment of dishonor and shame for our country", ruled the former US President Barack Obama in a statement.

"But we would not look the truth in the face if we considered this event as a total surprise", he added, denouncing the "violent crescendo" of recent months, fueled by the Republicans' refusal to "tell the truth" .

Former President Bill Clinton also denounced an "unprecedented attack" on American institutions, "fueled by more than four years of poisonous politics."

"The fuse has been lit by Donald Trump," accused the former Democratic head of state.

"It doesn't represent who we are as a nation"

For Republican George W. Bush, the eruption of pro-Trump supporters on Capitol Hill and the interruption of the certification session of Joe Biden's presidential victory for several hours was worthy of a "banana republic".

"I am appalled by the irresponsible behavior of certain political leaders since the election and by the lack of respect shown today towards our institutions, our traditions and our police forces", underlined the 43rd President of the United States.

"It is a national tragedy and it does not represent who we are as a nation," said former Democratic President Jimmy Carter, who called for "a peaceful outcome".
