Würzburg (dpa / lby) - Despite the long majority, the Würzburger Kickers missed an important sign in the relegation battle in the basement duel of the 2nd Bundesliga against FC St. Pauli.

In the self-proclaimed final to stay in class, the Lower Franconians had to be content with a 1-1 (1-0) against the tireless Hamburgers on Wednesday evening.

With the first point after five defeats in a row, the Würzburgs remain bottom of the table.

After the draw in the catch-up game, St. Pauli has been without a threesome for twelve games and is the penultimate one with four points more than the Kickers.

Newcomer Marvin Pieringer from SC Freiburg II gave Kickers the lead in the ninth minute with a penalty kick.

After a yellow-red card against Pauli captain Marvin Knoll (41st), the team of coach Bernhard Trares even played in an intense duel for a long time in the majority.

Ironically, the former Würzburg Rico Benatelli (57th) rewarded the eager guests.

"I was sure that I would clean it up," said Pieringer.

"For the first game I did it properly."

For Benatelli, his return was “definitely something special”.

The midfielder summed up: "It was good and important that we came back."

Trares changed his starting XI to four positions.

And off the pitch, the Würzburg team also set an example when Sebastian Schuppan sat on the bench for the first time since his promotion to sports director.

After a foul by Knoll on Pieringer, the newcomer from Breisgau converted the penalty himself. The Hamburg team then had bad luck with the aluminum twice.

First Daniel-Kofi Kyereh (14th) only hit the post, then a header from 17-year-old Igor Matanovic (25th) landed on the crossbar.

On the other side, Daniel Hägele (19th) caught the ball from five meters away from keeper Svend Brodersen and missed the 2-0.

The meeting was originally scheduled for December 16, but it was postponed after a Corona case at the Kickers.

And St. Pauli did not give up.

There was nothing to be seen from one man less when the Würzburg team just couldn't get the ball out of their own danger zone - Benatelli turned ice cold.

On the offensive, the Kickers couldn't think of anything else.
