Even if the prosecution does not report any new arrests, the investigation is continuing after the fatal shooting which occurred on Saturday evening in the city of Aubiers in Bordeaux.

The custody of five young adults, arrested between Sunday evening and Monday morning, was thus extended Tuesday by 48 hours.

The five suspects, aged 18 to 21, had been taken into police custody for murder and attempted murder in an organized gang, after the automatic gun shooting that left one dead, a 16-year-old teenager, and four injured, including three young people aged 13 to 16, in this city north of Bordeaux.

Escalating tensions between neighborhoods

The extension of police custody was requested on Tuesday by the prosecution, under the derogatory regime which allows such an extension beyond 48 hours, in certain types of serious cases, in this case murder and attempted organized gang murders.

It was pronounced by the judge of freedoms and detention.

The prosecution did not wish to communicate further on the state of the current judicial police investigation.

At around 10:50 p.m. on Saturday, a group of young people who were in a small plot in the heart of Aubiers, a city of more than 3,500 inhabitants north of Bordeaux, had been the target of bursts of automatic weapon fire from a vehicle past their height.

The shooting took place, according to the prosecution and local elected officials, in a context of "escalation of tensions between neighborhoods for several weeks".

The Aubiers district has sporadically been associated with fights, or rivalries, with two other districts in the north of Bordeaux.
