Outgoing US President Donald Trump called on his supporters to "go home" after they stormed the Capitol building during a demonstration they held, in response to his call to prevent Congress from endorsing Democratic President-elect Joe Biden's victory in the presidential election.

Trump called in a recorded speech on his supporters to withdraw, indicating that their goals must be achieved peacefully, reiterating his fiery allegations that the presidential elections were "stolen" from him.

He directed his words to his supporters, "I realize your pain. The elections were stolen from us, but you must return to your homes. We must abide by peace and law and order."

He added, "I love you."

He concluded by saying that the system must be dissolved and that we respect the law enforcement forces.

The House and Senate had suspended the joint ratification session on Biden's victory after Trump's supporters stormed the Congress building, after he called on them to go to the building to prevent what they described as election theft, while the Pentagon refused to deploy the National Guard.

The Al-Jazeera camera monitored the storming of the Congressional Trump supporters, who reached the balcony near the podium that will witness the inauguration of President Biden, and clashes erupted between security and supporters of Trump protesters inside the Congress building.
