Dortmund (dpa / lnw) - Five small pygmy otters from the Dortmund zoo are currently exploring their enclosure.

At the beginning of November, the pair of dwarf otters, Malou and Kon, who had only recently lived together, had five young animals, as the city of Dortmund announced on Wednesday.

After the first few weeks that the animals were hidden in the nest, they now leave it for longer and longer excursions, as it was said.

Before they can go outside, however, they have to put on a little more bacon in order to be able to bathe in cold temperatures, as a spokeswoman said.

The animals develop well and typically for their species. On the other hand, it is not a matter of course that both parents take part in raising their little ones.

In the case of dwarf otters, the expectant mother drives away the father and keeps them away from the little ones.

However, since they got together in June 2020, Malou and Kon get on well - and now they also look after the little ones together.
