Jena (dpa / th) - To investigate the occurrence of winter birds in Thuringia, observations from nature lovers are again asked.

A bird counting action by the Nature Conservation Union (Nabu) goes into the eleventh round from Friday to Sunday, as the Thuringia National Association of Nabu announced on Wednesday.

Anyone wishing to take part in the "Hour of the Winter Birds" should keep an eye on for an hour during this period of time which birds and how many in a place such as a balcony, garden or park.

According to the information, the data can be reported by telephone, on the Internet or with a Nabu app.

“The“ Hour of Winter Birds ”is very popular with us in Thuringia, last year over 5000 Thuringians took part,” reported Klaus Lieder, bird expert at Nabu Thuringia.

This year, the Nabu is particularly interested in blue tits.

The background to this is an epidemic triggered by a bacterium last spring.

According to the conservationists, this caused the deaths of thousands of blue tits.

Animals with symptoms were also found in Thuringia.

“During the bird count in May 2020, 30 percent fewer blue tits were reported to us in the Free State than in the previous year.

We are now curious to see whether the situation has improved in winter, ”said Lieder.

Last year, according to Nabu, more than 143,000 people took part in the counting action organized by the Bavarian State Association for Bird Protection.

One of the findings from the previous counts is that in cold and snowy winters, significantly more birds come close to humans.

"The long series of increasingly mild winters has recently led to falling winter bird numbers," it said.
