Dresden (dpa / sn) - In the discussion about a possible cancellation of the winter holidays, Saxony's government has agreed on a compromise: The holidays should not be canceled, but shortened, said Minister of Education Christian Piwarz (CDU) on Tuesday evening in Dresden after a cabinet meeting.

A holiday week is brought forward to the first week of February.

This should serve as a “breather” for students, parents and teachers, explained Piwarz.

The second holiday week should then be made up for in the Holy Week before Easter.

If the number of infections allows, schools and daycare centers will reopen in restricted regular operations from February 8, announced Piwarz.

As in the spring, the primary schools are to be taught in fixed classes, while the secondary schools alternate between lessons at home and at school.

However, the students in the final classes should be able to go back to school from January 18th.

For this purpose, the classes should be divided.

The final classes include, for example, the 10th grade for the secondary school leaving certificate and grades 11 and 12 at the grammar school.

The state government wants to adopt the rules in a new corona protection ordinance on Friday.

The current one is valid until January 10th.
