The Democratic Party won the two seats at stake on Tuesday January 5 in Georgia for the US Senate, effectively taking control of the upper house of the United States Congress and facilitating the implementation of Joe Biden's plans.

In two very close ballots, the Democratic candidate Raphael Warnock won against the outgoing Republican elected Kelly Loeffler, according to projections by American television channels and the Edison Research institute, while the other Democrat, Jon Ossoff, won by a narrow margin against Republican David Perdue.

With this double blow from the Democrats, the Senate will be divided into two equal camps of 50 parliamentarians but the vice-president-elect Kamala Harris will have the last word to decide in the event of a tie, giving de facto the majority to the party of Joe Biden, who already controls the House of Representatives.

If the Republicans had won at least one of the two seats, they would have retained a narrow majority in the Senate and would have been able to hinder Joe Biden's action or obstruct his choices for certain positions in the Senate. administration or justice system.

"Everything is possible"

“We were told we couldn't win this election. But tonight we have proven that with hope, hard work and people by our side anything is possible,” said Raphael Warnock, a pastor Baptist, to his followers in an online message.

This second round in Georgia, a peculiarity of the state, was made necessary by the fact that no candidate obtained an absolute majority in the first, on November 3.

Traditional Republican stronghold, Georgia surprised November 3 by giving a narrow majority of about 12,000 votes to Joe Biden on Donald Trump and this second round of the senatorial elections, because of the importance of its stake at the national level, aroused a strong mobilization in both camps, with a record participation estimated at 4.5 million voters.

The last days of the campaign were also marked by Donald Trump's efforts to obtain a reversal of the presidential result in that state.

The outgoing president, who does not recognize the victory of his Democratic rival, pressured Brad Raffensperger on Saturday to "find" enough votes in his favor, according to a telephone interview reported by the Washington Post.
