Saarbrücken (dpa / lrs) - In search of a murder victim from almost 30 years ago, the police want to continue to scour a forest near Wadgassen (Saarlouis district).

"Another search is planned, which should be completed depending on the weather in the next week," said a spokesman for the state police headquarters on Wednesday in Saarbrücken.

The forest area is divided into three sections, some of which have already been searched several times.

So far, the remains of the man from Völklingen, who has been missing and allegedly killed since September 1991, have not been found.

The search began in the late summer of 2020 after new information emerged in the course of the investigation: The focus was on three men who are suspected of killing the man in the forest and then burying the body there.

One of the three Germans who came into custody was found dead in his cell on Tuesday.

The authorities assumed a suicide.

Despite the death: The trial for joint murder against the other two defendants should begin at the beginning of February in the Saarbrücken regional court as planned, a court spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

According to the indictment, the men lured the then 27-year-old man into the forest and killed him there with a stick and kicks.

The police remain confident that they can find the man's remains.

The search is difficult, however: “With a lay-time of around 30 years, it is unclear what can still be found of the body.

External factors in particular play a role here.

Furthermore, the terrain itself and the vegetation have changed significantly during this time. "
