Les Sables-d'Olonne (dpa) - Solo circumnavigator Boris Herrmann has passed the third and last cape before the final Atlantic spurt at the Vendée Globe: The hamburger crossed the longitude of Cape Horn early Tuesday morning at 3:27 a.m. German time after 57 days , 13 hours and 7 minutes at sea.

However, contrary to his hopes, the currently tenth-placed skipper of the “Seaexplorer - Yacht Club de Monaco” could not see Cape Horn.

In stormy conditions with 30 to 40 knots of strong winds, Herrmann Cape Horn only came within a good 40 nautical miles of his fifth, but first solo passage.

The first German Vendée Globe participant had to struggle with technical setbacks.

First of all, his generator failed the day before.

After a feverish search, he was able to repair the broken cable quickly.

In addition, a crack in the main sail forced him to pass Cape Horn only with a small foresail and correspondingly less boat speed.

Herrmann slipped back to tenth place.

"That hurts.

It hurts very, very much.

But I'll never give up the fight, ”said Herrmann.

In the final third of the Atlantic race, the leading Vendée Globe group is led by Frenchman Yannick Bestaven (“Maître Coq IV”) ahead of fellow countrymen Charlie Dalin (“Apivia”) and Thomas Ruyant (“LinkedOut”).

Herrmann starts his race to catch up with almost 800 nautical miles behind the leader.

The fastest boats are expected to return to the port of departure and arrival at Le Sables-d'Olonne at the end of January.
