Washington (AP) - The US government has reacted with sharp criticism to the increase in uranium enrichment by Iran in the Fordo nuclear facility.

"Iran's enrichment of uranium in Fordo to 20 percent is a clear attempt to intensify its nuclear blackmail campaign - an attempt that will continue to fail," said a State Department spokeswoman in Washington on Monday.

It is trusted that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will monitor and report on new Iranian nuclear activities.

Iran announced on Monday that it had started increasing its uranium enrichment to 20 percent at the Fordo nuclear facility south of the capital Tehran.

The IAEA was informed about the process as well as the new Atomic Energy Act, which among other things provides for an increase in uranium enrichment to 20 percent.

The IAEA reported to the member states of the organization that their inspectors were on site during the conversion of the enrichment.

A seal of the organization had been replaced by a cylinder with uranium by IAEA inspectors.

“The cylinder was then connected to a line to start the enrichment process to 20 percent,” IAEA boss Rafael Grossi wrote to the member states.

US President Donald Trump withdrew from the international nuclear deal with Iran in 2018.

The Democrat Joe Biden will be sworn in as the successor to the Republican Trump on January 20.

Biden was Vice President under Barack Obama, whose administration helped negotiate the 2015 Vienna Agreement.

After Biden takes office, Tehran is hoping for the lifting of the US sanctions that plunged the country into the worst economic crisis in its recent history.
