Dresden (dpa / sn) - The Saxon Teachers' Association has rejected plans by the state government to cancel the winter holidays.

"Pupils and teachers need a rest period before the start of the second half of the school year," said the association chairman Jens Weichelt on Tuesday.

The preparation and supervision of the home learning tasks meant an enormous amount of time for the teachers.

The planned extension of the Easter vacation by four days is not an acceptable substitute, it said.

In addition, many parents could not simply postpone their planned vacation.

Saxony is considering canceling the winter holidays in February and compensating for the Easter holidays.

The cabinet wants to discuss this.

Also on the agenda is how to proceed with the schools and daycare centers.

In the evening, Minister of Culture Christian Piwarz (CDU) wants to comment.

The infection rate had to drop to a low level again before the schools could gradually be opened, warned the teachers' association.

According to media reports, daycare centers and schools in Saxony are to remain closed until the end of January, only graduation classes start earlier.

From February, among other things, lessons in an alternating model are planned - the students then alternate between lessons at school and at home.

The State Parents' Council, meanwhile, doubted that missing learning material could be made up by postponing the winter holidays.

Many schools are also not prepared in terms of personnel and technology for alternating lessons, it said.

The committee accused the Ministry of Education of failures: Ten months after the first lockdown it was not possible to introduce the schools across the board to hybrid forms of teaching, said a spokesman.

In addition to technical equipment of the classrooms with camera systems, a fast internet connection would be necessary.

In addition, the content and didactic of the learning content would have to be adapted to the new form of learning.
