Oberhof (AP) - Oberhof's mayor Thomas Schulz sees a way for the closure of the winter sports community for non-residents, as planned by him, after talks with the Interior Ministry and the police.

"I am more than confident that we can come to a sensible solution," said the politician on Tuesday when asked.

In the past few days, a mass rush of day trippers had led to chaotic conditions in the winter sports resort in Thuringia.

He envisions that controls will take place at the town entrances to which only those who can prove a legitimate interest will be allowed through.

This included residents, suppliers and service providers as well as the participants and officials of the Biathlon World Cup, which starts on Friday.

"A certain amount of day tourists is certainly conceivable, but if it gets out of hand, we have to close down," said Schulz.

He cannot say whether Oberhof will be a destination for day trippers from Saxony-Anhalt and Bavaria on Wednesday (tomorrow).

January 6th is a public holiday in both federal states.

No spectators are allowed for the World Cup on the weekend and a second one in the coming week.

The area at Grenzadler is completely closed.

According to Schulz, up to 10,000 and more tourists have flocked to the city in the past few days.

Cars were sometimes parked in fire service driveways and other security-relevant places.

"The whole city was parked up."
