Luxembourg (dpa) - Luxembourg is relaxing its measures to contain the corona pandemic.

From Monday (January 11), shops are likely to reopen under strict conditions, said Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel on Tuesday after a meeting of the government council.

Face-to-face teaching is starting again in schools, and sports and cultural institutions can also catch up again under certain conditions, said Bettel.

Restaurants and pubs remained closed until the end of January.

The strict contact restrictions did not change either: only a maximum of two people from another household could come to visit.

At gatherings of more than four people, a mask is required as before, said Bettel.

The legislative texts are to be passed in parliament this week.

The numbers of new corona infections have decreased compared to the beginning of December, said Bettel.

From an average of 550 to 167 new infections per day.

"The situation is mixed and remains tense, but the trend is pointing in the right direction."

The night-time exit restriction will also be relaxed: In future, it should apply again from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. and not from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. as it is now.

"January will be a critical month," said Health Minister Paulette Lenert.

But one is happy to say that the strict measures that have been in place, especially since Christmas, have broken the wave.

When deciding on new rules, it was also taken into account that more and more people were suffering psychologically from the consequences of the restrictions, said Bettel.

"These problems should not be underestimated."

In the clinics, the number of Covid 19 patients was currently falling, but that of the mentally ill was increasing.
