Hanover (dpa / lni) - Unlike the governing parties SPD and CDU, the Greens in Lower Saxony increased their membership again last year.

In December, the Greens passed the 10,000-member mark, a year and a half earlier it had been less than 8,000.

The co-chairman Hanso Janßen stated that many people wanted to become active themselves, this was particularly noticeable during the referendum to preserve biodiversity.

In contrast, Prime Minister Stephan Weil's SPD lost almost 2,000 members.

At the end of 2020 there were almost 53,000 comrades in Lower Saxony.

The CDU also suffered losses: with around 55,700 members, the party had around 1,200 fewer than a year earlier.

According to the party, the number of members of the FDP remained constant at around 6,000 year-on-year. At the beginning of February, the Liberals had to struggle with exit requests after the FDP politician Thomas Kemmerich in Thuringia was elected head of government with votes from the AfD.

General Secretary Konstantin Kuhle assessed the stable number of members at the end of the year as positive.

"This number is a good starting point for the next two years, in which the local elections in Lower Saxony, the federal election and the state election are central challenges," he said.

The left, which is not currently represented in the Lower Saxony state parliament, recorded a slight increase to around 3,150 members with around 100 entries.

"In the entry form, the dominant topics are: anti-fascism, anti-AfD, anti-racism, climate change, environmental protection," said Thomas Horstmann from the regional office.
