Hamburg (dpa / lno) - Debutant Adam Dzwigala has nourished hopes for better times in the 2nd Bundesliga despite the false start into the new football year at FC St. Pauli.

The Pole, who was brought in during the short Christmas break, played his first game since February in Fürth (1: 2) and offered a solid performance alongside defense chief Marvin Knoll.

“It was very decent for the fact that he didn't play for a long time,” said coach Timo Schultz.

"Adam tried to solve the situation playfully and defended well a few times."

Dzwigala had played for Deportivo Aves in Portugal's 1st division until summer 2020 and was most recently without a club.

In the trial training session, the 25-year-old convinced the Kiezclub and received a contract until 2022. He could be the hoped-for reinforcement for the penultimate table in central defense.

The second bearer of hope is Guido Burgstaller.

The 31-year-old striker from Austria sustained an abdominal vascular injury on his debut in October and had to undergo an operation.

In Fürth, the attacker who had come from Schalke 04 was back on the field for the first time - even if only for a few minutes.

«I am happy that he is back.

He's doing the troops extremely well, ”said Schultz, who wanted the veteran to give him a“ push ”in the attack.

It is quite possible that Burgstaller will get more playing time on Wednesday (6.30 p.m. / Sky) in the catch-up game at the bottom of the table, Würzburger Kickers.

How things will continue at FC St. Pauli on the problem position in the goal is open.

U21 national goalkeeper Svend Brodersen played again in Fürth, but made a big mistake when he conceded the second goal and again could not justify the promotion to number one.

In addition, Dennis Smarsch was on the bench, while long-time goalkeeper Robin Himmelmann was not in the squad.

"I can only nominate two goalkeepers," said Schultz.

By not considering Himmelmann, the coach fueled speculation that the 31-year-old keeper could leave the club this winter.

Then St. Pauli would have to get a goalkeeper.
