Former Prime Minister Felipe González called on the international community on Monday to support Juan Guaidó as the legitimate representative of the Government of Venezuela
against the "new outrage of the tyrannical regime"
of Nicolás Maduro by "occupying" the National Assembly after some elections " fraudulent ".
González made this call the day before, after five years
, Chavismo officially retakes control of the Venezuelan Parliament
despite the fact that the main opposition forces, led by Guaidó, have declared that they will extend their functions for another year considering that the legislative elections they were a "fraud".
In a statement, González considered that "the illegitimate government of Maduro
wants to close the circle of tyranny by occupying the National Assembly
after fraudulent elections.
Given this, he appealed to the international community that defends the values of democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights, reject "this
new outrage of the tyrannical regime."
"The Assembly elected in December 2015, now chaired by Juan Guaidó, is
the one that represents the Venezuelan popular sovereignty,
expressed in free elections. That is why - he added - it cannot be replaced other than by another way out of democratic elections with guarantees."
He insisted on his support for Guaidó, considering that he is the politically responsible with
democratic legitimacy
who must continue his task of representing the government of Venezuela.
"The people of Venezuela deserve the
support of all democrats
in their aspiration for free elections and with guarantees to elect a new Assembly and a president of the republic," González stressed.
